Country Music Hall of Fame Requests Everly Brothers Box Set for Permanent Archives

Established in 1961, the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum honors and preserves lasting contributions to country music. As part of this continuing commitment, the organization has requested two limited edition box sets featuring the music of the Everly Brothers, which will be permanently housed in their archives. These box sets have been produced by 180 Gram Records in partnership with Cadence Records, the Everly Brothers’ original record label in the late 1950s. Each box set, part of a strictly limited run of 5,000 sets available to the public, contains four LPs on 180g vinyl.

The Everly Brothers are comprised of two real-life brothers, Don and Phil. Combining rock and roll rhythms with classic country, they scored a series of hit singles in the late 1950s, and went on to become one of the most successful duos in music history in terms of top singles and album sales. They recorded 35 Billboard Top 100 singles and 26 singles that reached the Billboard Top 40. The Everly Brothers have influenced many subsequent musical artists, including the Eagles, the Rolling Stones, the Beatles, and the Bee Gees. Their influence and enduring appeal were acknowledged with a 1986 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1997, and induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2001. The July 2010 archiving of the Everly Brothers 4-LP box set with the Country Music Hall of Fame represents one further step in safeguarding the legacy of the Everly Brothers for future generations.

The Everly Brothers’ trademark steel-string guitar playing and close vocal harmonies are evident in some of their most well-known hits, including “Wake Up Little Susie,” “Bye Bye Love,” and “All I Have to Do Is Dream,” all of which are featured in the box set. These hits and more were produced between 1957 and 1960, a time when the brothers were signed to Cadence Records. Original material from the Cadence Records vault was rediscovered, remastered, and pressed on to 180g virgin vinyl for a 4-LP set. Songs are presented in the original running order on each LP, and the LPs themselves are stored in a custom-designed presentation box. Each limited edition box set comes packaged with reproductions of original album artwork, as well as a 14 x 22 inch recreation of a Cadence Records promotional poster from the era.

Box sets come with certificates of authenticity, and are individually numbered. The collection is registered with the Limited Edition Registry of the United States, as well as the Library of Congress. To learn more about the Everly Brothers 4-LP box set on 180g vinyl, visit the 180 Gram Records website at http://www.180gramrecords.com.

(NEW YORK, NY – June 24, 2010) — On July 15 the Guggenheim will launch Dark Sounds, a three-part series of live music performances accompanying the exhibition Haunted: Contemporary Photography/Video/Performance, currently on view at the museum through September 6. Produced by Sam Brumbaugh, Special Events Consultant, and Bronwyn Keenan, Associate Director of Special Events, the series takes its thematic cue from the conceptual threads that weave through Haunted, aiming to evoke the exhibition’s elements of melancholy, ghostliness, the uncanny, and our collective and individual obsession with accessing the past. The series title is borrowed from the writings of Montague Rhodes James (1862–1936), who is often described as the father of the modern ghost story.

Dark Sounds kicks off with the richly modernized Balkan gypsy folk of Beirut on Thursday, July 15; followed by Andrew Bird & Ian Schneller’s Sonic Arboretum, a site-specific performance involving violin, looped passages, and a landscape of horn speakers on Thursday, August 5; and then by the deeply melodic, electronic, and jazz-improvised sound of Cinematic Orchestra on Friday, September 3.

The Dark Sounds series is made possible in part by Dr. Martens.

Doors open at 8 pm and guests are encouraged to view the museum exhibitions Haunted: Contemporary Photography/Video/Performance and the Deutsche Bank Series at the Guggenheim Julie Mehretu: Grey Area before the performances, which start at 10 pm in the museum’s famed Frank Lloyd Wright–designed rotunda.

BEIRUT July 15, 2010
Multi-instrumentalist Zach Condon is behind the critically acclaimed American band Beirut, which he formed in Albuquerque in 2006, recruiting friends for the recording of the debut album Gulag Orkestar. Inspired by Condon’s European travels, Gulag Orkestar is deeply influenced by Balkan folk and gypsy music, and features an eclectic array of instruments such as trumpets, ukuleles, glockenspiels, mandolins, violins, and cellos. The album was almost entirely recorded in Condon’s bedroom. For Beirut’s second full-length album, The Flying Club Cup (2007), Condon drew from the Gallic tradition of Chanson Française to produce an LP that revisits and reinterprets the wistful genre through a unique blend of rich vocals and layered accordions, horns, violins, piano, brass, and bass. Beirut also produced a full-length double EP, March of the Zapotec/Holland (2009), and three additional EPs. Known for their memorable live shows, Beirut performs with a varying number of members, ranging from 6 to 10.

ANDREW BIRD AND IAN SCHNELLER August 5, 2010
Andrew Bird is a Chicago-based multi-instrumentalist and lyricist known for his experimental forays into pop music that incorporate elements of gypsy jazz, classical, folk, and country blues traditions. Bird has released nine albums since 1996. In a live setting, passages of violin, guitar, voice, and glockenspiel are looped and layered, crafting melodic hooks and rhythms from spontaneous stabs and strums. For Dark Sounds, Bird will collaborate with sculptor, inventor, and luthier Ian Schneller of Specimen Products to present Andrew Bird & Ian Schneller’s Sonic Arboretum, an audiovisual landscape featuring audio sculptures scattered around the rotunda floor that project sound skyward. Schneller has been designing and building his own line of custom guitars, tube amplifiers, and audio horn speakers for more than 25 years. With a master’s degree in sculpture from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, his creations are sonic, kinetic, structural investigations that blend modern and vintage aesthetics and technology. Alone, the sculptures vaguely resemble a union of Victrola speakers and plant life, while Sonic Arboretum’s cumulative effect evokes a symphonic field of poppies, a prairie of sound, a forest floor of hornlings—all parts of one “ecosystem.”

CINEMATIC ORCHESTRA September 3, 2010
For Jason Swinscoe, founder of the Cinematic Orchestra, working life began at Ninja Tune, the London-based independent record label. By day, Swinscoe distributed records while by night he developed a unique sound that would eventually evolve into the Cinematic Orchestra. Swinscoe introduced other like-minded musicians to the act and soon after, a string of albums emerged. Following their 1999 debut album Motion they have released Every Day (2002), Man With A Camera (2003), and Ma Fleur (2007), as well as the soundtrack The Crimson Wing for DisneyNature (2009), Live at the Royal Albert Hall (2008), Remixes 1998–2000 (2000), and Late Night Tales, a compilation (2010). Cinematic Orchestra’s diverse, imaginative, jazz-improvised, electronic approach was praised by Uncut magazine as “every hard-boiled, neon-lit Hollywood thriller you’ve ever seen.”

The Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation
Founded in 1937, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation is dedicated to promoting the understanding and appreciation of art, primarily of the modern and contemporary periods, through exhibitions, education programs, research initiatives, and publications. Currently the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation owns and operates the Guggenheim Museum on Fifth Avenue in New York and the Peggy Guggenheim Collection on the Grand Canal in Venice, and also provides programming and management for two other museums in Europe that bear its name: the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao and the Deutsche Guggenheim in Berlin. The Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, a museum of modern and contemporary art designed by architect Frank Gehry, is scheduled to open in 2013.

“Forty years later, the music of The Doors, Joplin, and Hendrix still resonate in rock circles and popular culture, an enduring testimony to the power and freedom of 1960s rock,” said Museum Executive Director and music historian Robert Santelli. “Provocative, counter-cultural, and experimental, these artists stirred senses and celebrated personal freedom like never before, so we’re pleased to offer fans the rare opportunity to engage with them again in such a personal way.”

Rising from distinctly different backgrounds yet united by a common love of the blues and rock and roll, Hendrix, Joplin, and The Doors made music that revolutionized and energized rock’s most fertile and provocative period: the 1960s. The untimely deaths of Jimi Hendrix (Sept. 18, 1970), Janis Joplin (Oct. 4, 1970), and Jim Morrison (July 3, 1971), all at the age of 27 and within one year of each other, marked the end of a decade unmatched in free-spirited and experimental creativity. To this day, the losses are still being felt: Hendrix stands unsurpassed as the greatest electric guitarist of all-time; Joplin’s heightened dimension of blues singing has yet to be matched; and never has a band brought poetry and artistic sophistication to blues and rock the way The Doors did. Strange Kozmic Experience will explore how these artists became icons, where they took music, and why their art still resonates.

Bringing together more than 60 diverse artifacts and 30 rare photographs never before displayed together in Los Angeles, the exhibit features holdings from the Doors Music Co, the Morrison and Courson Families, the Janis Joplin Estate, Experience Hendrix L.L.C., Experience Music Project, Jampol Artist Management, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, Hard Rock International, and other private collections. On display, visitors will see a wide-ranging array of items, including:

· Joplin’s custom-painted 1965 Porsche 356c Cabriolet
· Morrison’s never-before-seen journals
· Handwritten lyrics and letters
· Iconic wardrobe pieces
· Original paintings by Joplin
· Instruments used during some of the 1960s most important performances and recordings
· 1960s ephemera, including ticket stubs, concert posters, fan memorabilia
· Instruments and lyrics from blues influencers Willie Dixon, Muddy Waters, Odetta, Albert King, Howlin’ Wolf, and B.B. King
· Photographs from iconic 1960s photographers, Joel Brodsky, Jim Marshall, Elliott Landy, Lisa Law, Eddie Kramer, and more
· Seminal 1960s poster art
· And much more…

Artifacts will be accompanied by an exciting selection of biographical films and archive footage. Archived talk show interviews with The Doors, Joplin, and Hendrix will also be on display, made available with the assistance of the Paley Center for Media.

On Wednesday, April 7, to celebrate the exhibit’s opening, the Museum will screen the critically-acclaimed documentary narrated by Johnny Depp from Wolf Films/Strange Pictures, in association with Rhino Entertainment, When You’re Strange: A Film About The Doors, just days before its theatrical release. Public and educational programs related to Strange Kozmic Experience (including a master class on the music of the 1960s) will be announced shortly and will take place throughout the run of the exhibit.

Strange Kozmic Experience will be on display in The GRAMMY Museum’s Special Exhibits Gallery – where temporary exhibits will be showcased on a rotating basis – through February 13, 2011, before touring internationally. The GRAMMY Museum is located at 800 West Olympic Boulevard, Suite A245, Los Angeles, CA 90015. With an entrance off of Figueroa Street, the Museum resides within the L.A. LIVE campus, at the intersection of Olympic Boulevard and Figueroa Street in downtown Los Angeles.

Guggenheim Museum’s 5th Anniversary : Announces SEPT 25 It Came From Brooklyn Lineup

Julian Plenti (aka Paul Banks of Interpol) I’m In You with Rivka Galchen, Hampton Fancher, and Eugene Mirman, MC

(NEW YORK, NY – August 27, 2009)—The second It Came from Brooklyn concert will take place September 25, 2009, at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum with performances by Julian Plenti (aka Paul Banks of Interpol) and I’m In You and readings by authors Rivka Galchen and Hampton Fancher. Comedian Eugene Mirman will serve as the MC for the evening.

It Came from Brooklyn, the new concert series showcasing Brooklyn’s emerging and established talents in the fields of music and literature was conceived by coproducers Sam Brumbaugh and Bronwyn Keenan as part of the museum’s 50th Anniversary celebrations. The title of the series references Robert Gordon’s book It Came from Memphis, which details the birth of rock-n-roll in the 1950s.

“Over the past decade, Brooklyn has emerged as a place of astonishing artistic creativity and interdisciplinary experimentation,” said Brumbaugh, “Our aim is to share the spirit of this scene with the museum’s audience and beyond, while keeping a local feel for New Yorkers.”

Each program takes place in the famed Frank Lloyd Wright–designed rotunda and features live bands, literary readings, and comedy from 8 pm to 12 am. Audiences also have the opportunity to visit select sections of the Vasily Kandinsky retrospective on view this fall. “It Came from Brooklyn is meant to have a cabaret-like atmosphere,” Brumbaugh continued, “We want to offer a good night out, with music, comedy, literature, and art—all in one program.”

“Frank Lloyd Wright designed the Guggenheim to be a social space that engages the public,” said Keenan, who is Associate Director of Special Events at the museum. “The audience can move up and around the spiraling ramp during the acts for a concert experience that is at once monumental and intimate, a powerful contrast intrinsic to the series.”

Tickets are on sale at guggenheim.org/brooklyn. Tickets are $45 for non-members, $40 for members. Advance tickets can be purchased before September 10 for $38 for non-members, $33 for members.

All proceeds support the series and the Guggenheim’s exhibitions and programs.

8 pm: Doors open. The audience may view the Kandinsky exhibition or enjoy refreshments at the bar.
9 pm: Eugene Mirman welcomes the crowd and kicks off the evening.
9:15 pm: I’m in You
10 pm: Readings by Hampton Fancher and Rivka Galchen
10:30 pm: Julian Plenti

Julian Plenti Paul Banks of the critically acclaimed indie band Interpol has performed acoustically since 1998. His first solo effort, Julian Plenti is… Skyscraper was just released in August by Matador Records under the pseudonym Julian Plenti. Recorded at the Seaside Lounge in Park Slope, Brooklyn, and at Electric Lady Studios in Manhattan, the debut album features keyboards, horns, and strings augmenting guitars, bass, and drums, offering both ethereal soundscapes and urgent rock songs. For It Came from Brooklyn, Banks will perform selections from the album with his mostly Brooklyn-based band. Though Banks had a rehearsal space with Interpol in Brooklyn for years, he currently splits his time between Panama and the greater New York area. It Came from Brooklyn is Julian Plenti’s first public performance since 2002.

I’m In You The musical investigations of Brooklyn-based experimental band I’m In You have been described as part post-rock and part afro-punk disco, part cinematic soul. Band members Chris McHenry, Sebastian Ischer, Dmitiry Ishenko, and Andrei Zakow experiment with minimalist rhythm, heartbreak strings, free jazz horns, and noise-damaged guitars, the whole underscored by foreboding lyrics about relations of power and man’s existential limitations. They released their first LP War Dreams in 2008 and recently recorded the EP A Lurid View. For It Came from Brooklyn, they will perform an orchestral set highlighting their rhythmic and textural approach, with Glenn White and Mike Irwin on horns, Erica Dicker on violin, Katie Young on bassoon, and Monique Letamendi and Ricky Suarez on backing vocals. The band’s many members have lived, worked, rehearsed, recorded, and performed in Brooklyn since 2007.

Hampton Fancher Born in east LA, Hampton Fancher left home at 15, went to Europe, became a dancer, then retired five years later to become an actor. Under contract to various Hollywood studios throughout the ‘60s and early ‘70s, he appeared in “lots of bad TV and some unremarkable movies here and abroad,” all the while making short films, directing plays, and teaching. At 40, he gave up acting to concentrate on writing and directing, completing a dozen scripts, among them Ridley Scott’s Bladerunner, Mighty Quinn, and The Minus Man, which he also directed. Fancher has taught screenwriting at Columbia and NYU and is currently working on a book of short stories for Simon & Schuster. For It Came from Brooklyn, Fancher will read from the work of former Driggs Avenue resident, the legendary and peripatetic Henry Miller, whom Fancher met for the first time in 1957, when he was 18 and Miller was 66. Fancher is Rivka Galchen’s next-door neighbor in Brooklyn Heights.

Rivka Galchen Rivka Galchen received her MD from Mount Sinai in 2003 and her MFA from Columbia University in 2006. She is the author of the widely acclaimed debut novel, Atmospheric Disturbances, about a psychiatrist who becomes convinced that his wife has been replaced by a simulacrum. The novel was named a 2008 New York Times Notable Book and one of the best books of the year by numerous publications including Slate.com and Salon.com. Galchen’s essays and stories have appeared in Harper’s, Zoetrope, The New Yorker, The Believer, Scientific American, and the New York Times. For It Came from Brooklyn, Galchen will read from the work of one of her favorite writers, the American novelist and short-story writer Jane Bowles, who for a time shared a rooming house in Brooklyn Heights with her husband Paul Bowles, poet W. H. Auden, burlesque star and novelist Gypsy Rose Lee, and a circus animal trainer with two live-in chimps. Galchen is Hampton Fancher’s next-door neighbor in Brooklyn Heights.

Eugene Mirman Brooklyn-resident Eugene Mirman is a Russian-born comedian who grew up in Lexington, Massachusetts and majored in comedy at Hampshire College. Mirman has appeared on several TV shows, including in his own half-hour special on Comedy Central, Late Night with Conan O’Brien, Last Call with Carson Daly, a recurring role on HBO’s Flight of the Conchords, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Home Movies, Lucy, Daughter of the Devil, and the Adult Swim live action series Delocated. Mirman tours the US regularly and has released several comedy albums. His latest, due out in October from Sub Pop records is called God Is a Twelve-Year-Old Boy with Asperger’s. He’s also written a parody self-help guide to modern life entitled The Will To Whatevs, published by HarperCollins. Most recently, Mirman has been hosting shows in the Park Slope and Gowanus neighborhoods of Brooklyn while working on the September production of his second annual Eugene Mirman Comedy Festival.
