Transcendence Music Performance in 4 West Coast Cities – Singer/Songwriter Ed Hale

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Singer/Songwriter Ed Hale is taking his Transcendence music to four West Coast cities performing concerts that will long be remembered

New York, NY, August 4, 2010 – This welcome news was first announced by the International Pop Overthrow Festival who confirmed that Ed and his band will be performing in four cities on their west coast tour circuit taking place throughout August. The long-running IPO is well-known for showcasing the best artists of contemporary music and this event will be no exception!

Hale will kick off his first show in Los Angeles on August 7, with subsequent stops in Portland, Seattle, and Vancouver, BC. Dates, times and venues for all upcoming shows are available on www.myspace.com/edhale or the official IPO Festival website at www.internationalpopoverthrow.com. Ed will be performing with a four-piece group comprised of some of the best players from Brooklyn’s thriving music scene, and will be using the same guitar, bass, piano and cello set-up that he’s used in all his live concerts to support his latest album.

Known for his constant genre-jumping musical explorations, fans will love this minimalist, stripped down, all acoustic sound that is primarily composed of acoustic guitars and other string instruments – a style that Ed named ‘whisper pop’ after the album’s release. Ed’s instantly recognizable Bowiesque baritone will be soaring in and out of the hypnotic music of the band – creating an indelible sound that has fittingly been described by the press as ‘haunting,’ ‘irresistibly catchy,’ and ‘…instantly recognizable melodies that stick in your head for days.’

This has been a momentous year for this man of many talents; in his role as a U.S. civilian diplomat he met with Iranian dignitaries, made a stop at the UN to meet President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, followed that by meeting with tribal village chiefs in West Africa – all this while running his NY-based Dying Van Gogh Records label. However, presumably most significant of all to Ed was his marriage to Persian beauty and best friend, Nahal Mishel-Ghashgai, in a lavish, multi-cultural public wedding in Manhattan.

Fans of the singer hope that these west coast shows are a hint at a full-blown U.S. tour, giving them ample opportunity to see the Mercurial Renaissance Man in action, doing what he does best – music!

Background Music can Impair Performance, Cites New Study

Cardiff, Wales—July 27, 2010—For decades research has shown that listening to music alleviates anxiety and depression, enhances mood, and can increase cognitive functioning, such as spatial awareness. However, until now, research has not addressed how we listen to music. For instance, is the cognitive benefit still the same if we listen to music whilst performing a task, rather than before it? Further, how does our preference for a particular type of music affect performance? A new study from Applied Cognitive Psychology shows that listening to music that one likes whilst performing a serial recall task does not help performance any more than listening to music one does not enjoy.

The researchers explored the ‘irrelevant sound effect’ by requiring participants to perform serial recall (recall a list of 8 consonants in presentation order) in the presence of five sound environments: quiet, liked music (e.g., Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Stranglers, and Arcade Fire), disliked music (the track “Thrashers” by Death Angel), changing-state (a sequence of random digits such as “4, 7, 1, 6”) and steady-state (“3, 3, 3”). Recall ability was approximately the same, and poorest, for the music and changing-state conditions. The most accurate recall occurred when participants performed the task in the quieter, steady-state environments. Thus listening to music, regardless of whether people liked or disliked it, impaired their concurrent performance.

Lead researcher Nick Perham explains: “The poorer performance of the music and changing-state sounds are due to the acoustical variation within those environments. This impairs the ability to recall the order of items, via rehearsal, within the presented list. Mental arithmetic also requires the ability to retain order information in the short-term via rehearsal, and may be similarly affected by their performance in the presence of changing-state, background environments.”

Although music can have a very positive effect on our general mental health, music can, in the circumstances described, also have negative effects on cognitive performance. Perham remarks, “Most people listen to music at the same time as, rather than prior to performing a task. To reduce the negative effects of background music when recalling information in order one should either perform the task in quiet or only listen to music prior to performing the task.”

This study is published in the September 2010 issue of Applied Cognitive Psychology. Media wishing to receive a PDF of this article may contact scholarlynews@wiley.com.

‘The Union’ – Elton John & Leon Russell Musical Legends Collaborate

ELTON JOHN & LEON RUSSELL MUSICAL LEGENDS COLLABORATE ON ‘THE UNION’ Produced by Award-Winning T Bone Burnett To be Released October 19 on Decca Records

(NEW YORK, NY) July 6, 2010 – Decca Records is pleased to announce the release of the highly anticipated collaboration between two musical legends, Elton John and Leon Russell with The Union available October 19 in the U.S. (To be released October 25 in the U.K. on Mercury Records.) This album marks the first time these iconic artists have worked together since 1970.

Produced by Oscar and multiple-Grammy winning producer T Bone Burnett, who took home numerous awards in 2009 for his production work on Raising Sand with Robert Plant and Alison Krause, The Union features songs written by John and his lifelong lyricist Bernie Taupin, as well as in combination with the extraordinary talents of Russell and Burnett.

Recorded live in the studio with John and Russell on dueling pianos, the album features a variety of musical genres from R&B, soul, gospel, country, pop and rock. Icons Neil Young and Brian Wilson provide guest vocals on the 16-track record along with legendary R&B organist Booker T. Jones, steel guitarist Robert Randolph and a 10-piece gospel choir.

Russell first met John in 1970 when he attended John’s first ever U.S. show at the famous Troubadour in Los Angeles. The meeting heralded the beginning of a long friendship and a mutual appreciation between the two artists. “In the late ’60s and early ‘70s, the one piano player and vocalist who influenced me more than anybody else was Leon Russell,” John said. “He was my idol.” The pair went on to tour together shortly thereafter at New York’s Fillmore East and to this day have held such high admiration for each other’s work.

After years of being out of touch, John listened to Russell’s music while on safari in Africa last summer and was inspired to reconnect with his idol. “Elton called to ask if I would do a duet album with him,’” Russell said. “I’m very happy that he chose me to do this.”

The monumental career of international singer/songwriter and performer Elton John has spanned more than three decades. He is the one of the top-selling solo artists of all time with 35 gold and 25 platinum albums and more than 250 million records sold worldwide. The National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences has awarded John multiple Grammys, including the Grammy Legend Award.

Russell has performed his gospel-infused southern boogie piano rock, blues and country music for over 50 years. This legendary and Grammy award winning musician and songwriter has topped music charts, led the famous Joe Cocker’s ‘Mad Dogs & Englishmen’ tour, performed with George Harrison and Friends at the Concert for Bangladesh and in 2006 was awarded a lifetime achievement award by the Bare Bones International Film Festival.

The Union is a unique collaboration of two of the most talented artists in the music business. Combining forces and fusing diverse talents, John and Russell along with Burnett have produced an extraordinary album.

Creed has sold close to 35 million albums and has performed live in front of millions since forming in 1995. Creed was the first act to have seven consecutive number one rock radio singles, four of which came off of their debut album, 1997′s My Own Prison. That album has sold more than six million copies in the U.S., and the follow-up, Human Clay, was certified Diamond for sales in excess of 11 million copies. Weathered, their third album, tied The Beatles’ Anthology for the most consecutive weeks at number one on Billboard’s Top 200 chart. After disbanding in 2003, Creed reunited for a three-month North American tour in the fall of 2009. Following the tour, the band released their fourth album, Full Circle, which debuted on Billboard’s Top 200 chart at number two, behind Michael Jackson’s This Is It. Creed has received numerous accolades, including several American Music and Billboard Awards, and the band won the GRAMMY for Best Rock Song for “With Arms Wide Open.”

NYC Drummer MIKE VENY Spearheading Campaign Via Twitter & Internet To Get 1,000,000 Petition Signatures Supporting Music Education In Public Schools

June 30, 2010, New York, NY — NYC professional drummer and drum teacher Mike Veny is spearheading a campaign — Become One in a Million — to promote music education to 1,000,000 people in 2010 via Twitter (Twitter.com/mikeveny), Facebook and the Internet (www. mikeveny.com/support-music-education ). The campaign encourages people to sign a petition supporting music education in the public schools, which will be sent to Congress and US Department of Education (mikeveny.com/support-music-education/petition). It also asks them to make a donation to the Fender Music Foundation, which underwrites the cost of musical instruments and equipment for school and therapeutic music programs.

“I am passionate about music education, because I personally experienced the difference it can make in a child’s life, ” said Veny. “As a kid, I had serious behavior problems — I was expelled from three schools and hospitalized three times for mental, emotional and behavioral problems. “After my third expulsion, my mother discovered the the Long Island High School for the Arts. I was accepted and my life totally changed,” he continued. “My grades went up, my behavior improved, and I discovered my mission in life. Today, I love being a professional drummer. Thanks to music education, I am happy, healthy and have a positive way to express myself.”

Veny has personally supported music education for years by donating a portion of all his website sales to the Fender Music Foundation, which provides grants to in-school, after school, and music therapy programs. To date, the foundation has helped over 35,000 people experience music, including many at-risk youth. Numerous studies have shown that exposure to music is extremely beneficial for both children and adults. “I’m living proof that music can make a difference in a child’s life,” said Veny. “That’s why I’m making a concerted effort to get the ‘support music education’ message in front of as many people as possible.

“I believe in the three ‘t’s’ of giving — time, treasure and talent. ” he said. “I give my time by volunteering, treasure through financial support of the Fender Foundation, and talent thorough my drumming and advocating for music education.” To learn more about supporting music education or the Fender Music Foundation, please visit www.mikeveny.com.

(NEW YORK, NY – June 24, 2010) — On July 15 the Guggenheim will launch Dark Sounds, a three-part series of live music performances accompanying the exhibition Haunted: Contemporary Photography/Video/Performance, currently on view at the museum through September 6. Produced by Sam Brumbaugh, Special Events Consultant, and Bronwyn Keenan, Associate Director of Special Events, the series takes its thematic cue from the conceptual threads that weave through Haunted, aiming to evoke the exhibition’s elements of melancholy, ghostliness, the uncanny, and our collective and individual obsession with accessing the past. The series title is borrowed from the writings of Montague Rhodes James (1862–1936), who is often described as the father of the modern ghost story.

Dark Sounds kicks off with the richly modernized Balkan gypsy folk of Beirut on Thursday, July 15; followed by Andrew Bird & Ian Schneller’s Sonic Arboretum, a site-specific performance involving violin, looped passages, and a landscape of horn speakers on Thursday, August 5; and then by the deeply melodic, electronic, and jazz-improvised sound of Cinematic Orchestra on Friday, September 3.

The Dark Sounds series is made possible in part by Dr. Martens.

Doors open at 8 pm and guests are encouraged to view the museum exhibitions Haunted: Contemporary Photography/Video/Performance and the Deutsche Bank Series at the Guggenheim Julie Mehretu: Grey Area before the performances, which start at 10 pm in the museum’s famed Frank Lloyd Wright–designed rotunda.

BEIRUT July 15, 2010
Multi-instrumentalist Zach Condon is behind the critically acclaimed American band Beirut, which he formed in Albuquerque in 2006, recruiting friends for the recording of the debut album Gulag Orkestar. Inspired by Condon’s European travels, Gulag Orkestar is deeply influenced by Balkan folk and gypsy music, and features an eclectic array of instruments such as trumpets, ukuleles, glockenspiels, mandolins, violins, and cellos. The album was almost entirely recorded in Condon’s bedroom. For Beirut’s second full-length album, The Flying Club Cup (2007), Condon drew from the Gallic tradition of Chanson Française to produce an LP that revisits and reinterprets the wistful genre through a unique blend of rich vocals and layered accordions, horns, violins, piano, brass, and bass. Beirut also produced a full-length double EP, March of the Zapotec/Holland (2009), and three additional EPs. Known for their memorable live shows, Beirut performs with a varying number of members, ranging from 6 to 10.

ANDREW BIRD AND IAN SCHNELLER August 5, 2010
Andrew Bird is a Chicago-based multi-instrumentalist and lyricist known for his experimental forays into pop music that incorporate elements of gypsy jazz, classical, folk, and country blues traditions. Bird has released nine albums since 1996. In a live setting, passages of violin, guitar, voice, and glockenspiel are looped and layered, crafting melodic hooks and rhythms from spontaneous stabs and strums. For Dark Sounds, Bird will collaborate with sculptor, inventor, and luthier Ian Schneller of Specimen Products to present Andrew Bird & Ian Schneller’s Sonic Arboretum, an audiovisual landscape featuring audio sculptures scattered around the rotunda floor that project sound skyward. Schneller has been designing and building his own line of custom guitars, tube amplifiers, and audio horn speakers for more than 25 years. With a master’s degree in sculpture from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, his creations are sonic, kinetic, structural investigations that blend modern and vintage aesthetics and technology. Alone, the sculptures vaguely resemble a union of Victrola speakers and plant life, while Sonic Arboretum’s cumulative effect evokes a symphonic field of poppies, a prairie of sound, a forest floor of hornlings—all parts of one “ecosystem.”

CINEMATIC ORCHESTRA September 3, 2010
For Jason Swinscoe, founder of the Cinematic Orchestra, working life began at Ninja Tune, the London-based independent record label. By day, Swinscoe distributed records while by night he developed a unique sound that would eventually evolve into the Cinematic Orchestra. Swinscoe introduced other like-minded musicians to the act and soon after, a string of albums emerged. Following their 1999 debut album Motion they have released Every Day (2002), Man With A Camera (2003), and Ma Fleur (2007), as well as the soundtrack The Crimson Wing for DisneyNature (2009), Live at the Royal Albert Hall (2008), Remixes 1998–2000 (2000), and Late Night Tales, a compilation (2010). Cinematic Orchestra’s diverse, imaginative, jazz-improvised, electronic approach was praised by Uncut magazine as “every hard-boiled, neon-lit Hollywood thriller you’ve ever seen.”
