Chicago’s Panda Riot Release Far & Near May 11th (RIYL: Lush, Velocity Girl, Serena Maneesh)

Chicago, IL - Panda Riot announces the release of Far & Near, May 11th (RIYL: Lush, Velocity Girl, Serena Maneesh)

While the first movement of the ?scene that celebrated itself? originated in southern England, the second movement seems to be coming from Chicago, and dream pop juggernaut Panda Riot is one of the best of the crop.

Panda Riot?s origins came about in Philadelphia between Brian Cooke, Rebecca Scott, and their buddy the drum machine after working on a short film. The scenes of underwater travels and airborne plans begot the blessed-out wall of sound sing-alongs that became Panda Riot. Justin and Melissa were picked up when they relocated to Chicago to round out the collective.

Panda Riot stays true to cannon, taking cues from their forefathers The Swirlies, Lush, and Velocity Girl. However, Panda Riot?s devastating noise is cut with a silky and sunny anthems, replete with instantly hummable melodies. The group not only displays an affable approach to music, they also show humor whenever possible ? and their cover of MIA?s ?Paper Planes? became one of Hype Machine?s most popular tracks of 2008.

The group?s engaging, audio-visual-sensory overload live show has put them in front of the likes of School of Seven Bells, Twin Tigers, and Akron/Family, a WOXY Lounge session in August of 2009, as well as got R.E.M.?s Michael Stipe to grip two of their CDs (have the group tell you the story sometime) when they played Athens? Popfest.

May 11tth, Panda Riot will unleash a new EP Far & Near ? a mature and sonically diverse collection of songs, ranging from the massive blast of reverberated guitars on ?Streetlights and You and Me,? to the gentle and whimsical ?Parallax View? (an ambient instrumental that will thrill fans of Mum before they jumped the shark).

Second Castleton Festival, July 2-25, 2010 - Four Orchestral Concerts to be Performed & More

New Production of Puccini’s Il Trittico and Staged Performances of Stravinsky’s L’histoire du soldat and De Falla’s Master Pedro’s Puppet Show All Led by Lorin Maazel to be Featured in the Second Castleton Festival, July 2-25

Festival to include revivals of Britten chamber operas The Turn of the Screw and The Beggar’s Opera

Four orchestral concerts to be performed by the Castleton Festival Orchestra

Recitals, master classes, art exhibitions and a concert of American music led by the Maazel Master Class participants included in the festival held at Castleton Farms, Rappahannock County, VA

February 16, 2010 — Artistic Directors Lorin Maazel and Dietlinde Turban-Maazel today announced that the second Castleton Festival will include a new production of Puccini’s Il Trittico that Maestro Maazel will conduct, his first performances of staged Puccini in the U.S. The festival will take place over four weekends at the Maazels’ Castleton Farms property in Rappahannock County, Virginia from Friday July 2 through Sunday July 25.

The Castleton Festival grew out of the Castleton residency program for young artists run by The Châteauville Foundation, founded by Lorin Maazel and his wife Dietlinde Turban-Maazel in 1997. The Castleton Festival brings around 200 young artists including singers, conductors, instrumentalists, directors, costume designers and lighting designers to live on the property for six weeks to work with professional mentors and prepare the performances of the operas and concerts.

In addition to four performances of all three one-act operas in Il Trittico (Il Tabarro, Suor Angelica and Gianni Schicchi), Maestro Maazel will also conduct the operas separately or in pairs during the festival (full schedule below). He will also lead staged performances of Stravinsky’s L’histoire du soldat and De Falla’s Master Pedro’s Puppet Show as well as a revival of the Britten/John Gay chamber opera The Beggar’s Opera. Timothy Myers, who was a Castleton Conducting Fellow during the 2009 festival, will return to lead three performances of Britten’s The Turn of the Screw.

All three opera productions and the staged Stravinsky and De Falla performances have been created especially for the Castleton stages by Castleton’s resident director, William Kerley, with sets and costumes designed by Nicholas Vaughan and lighting by Rie Ono. The Beggar’s Opera is a revival of the 2008 Castleton Residency production and The Turn of the Screw is a revival of last year’s festival production. The De Falla work, which is rarely presented as a fully staged piece, will feature puppets created and operated by Emily DeCola and Eric Wright from the New York-based Puppet Kitchen.

Four concerts featuring the Castleton Festival Orchestra, comprised of young professional musicians and advanced music conservatory students, will be held during the Festival. Three concerts will be conducted by Maestro Maazel: an all-Italian program on Saturday, July 3; an all-French program on Saturday, July 10; and an all-Beethoven Festival finale concert on Sunday, July 25. An all-American program will be presented on Friday, July 16 led by the young conductors selected for the Maazel Master Classes that are supported by Rolex as founding partner. Maestro Maazel will conduct Gershwin’s An American in Paris at this concert.

Performances are held in the intimate 140-seat custom-built Theatre House which has an orchestra pit that holds 20 musicians, and a 400-seat Festival Tent that will be specially erected on the property. This year’s tent is almost double the capacity of last year’s.

The 2010 Castleton Festival will open on Friday, July 2 with a Gala performance of Il Trittico.

“Last year’s inaugural Castleton Festival was the thrilling realization of a dream and far exceeded our expectations,” said Maestro Maazel. “Dietlinde and I look forward to welcoming this year’s Castleton Fellows to Virginia and we are delighted that a larger Festival tent means we can share the talents of these enthusiastic and talented young artists with more music lovers this year.”

In addition to the music and opera performances, Ms. Turban-Maazel has incorporated a range of community oriented activities into the Castleton Festival, including an open house, film screenings, art exhibitions and opportunities to showcase local produce.

“Our inspiration comes not only from the wonderful work of our young artists, but the warm and enthusiastic engagement of the entire community, that so quickly adopted the Festival as its own. The response from volunteers and patrons last year only affirmed our desire to build upon the success of the first festival,” said Ms. Turban-Maazel.

About The Châteauville Foundation
The Châteauville Foundation was established at Castleton Farms in 1997 by Lorin and Dietlinde Maazel. The Foundation’s mission is to nurture young artists, foster collaborative artistic enterprise and create opportunities within the community for shared cultural experience. An intimate, acoustically superb and highly versatile Theatre House on the Maazels’ 550-acre property is the focal point of the Foundation’s activities, which include a performance season of a dozen or more events, a multi-week summer festival that was inaugurated in 2009, and ongoing education and outreach activities for the community in Rappahannock County, Virginia, and beyond.

The Theatre House’s multi-purpose facilities make it ideally suited to a wide range of performances—recital and chamber music programs, jazz, world music, dance and theatre, in addition to the Residency program’s centerpiece chamber operas. The unique setting and intimacy of the space allow an unparalleled degree of communication between artists and audiences. To date, over 100 different performances have been offered at the Theatre House. The Foundation takes pride in presenting many of today’s most eminent artists (Emanuel Ax, Claire Bloom, Sir James and Lady Jeanne Galway, Itzhak Perlman, Pepe Romero, Gil Shaham, Randy Weston) alongside rewarding family programs (The Cashore Marionettes, Avner “The Eccentric” Eisenberg, Tomáš Kubínek) and new/young artists and ensembles, including the Amstel Saxophone Quartet, the Rincones Dance Company, percussionist Colin Currie, eighth blackbird, cellist Han-Na Chang, the Avalon and Attacca String Quartets, and many others. The presentations are truly international in scope from local songwriter/composer Paul Reisler to Chinese pipa virtuoso Wu Man, to Kinobe and Soul Beat Africa.

The concept of The Castleton Residency & Festival emerged from tremendous creative energies unleashed by the Foundation’s first fully-staged chamber opera production in May 2006, Benjamin Britten’s The Turn of the Screw. The Castleton Residency is now a twice annual four- to five-week program designed to connect master artists with those who will carry the performing arts forward into the next generation. It is centered on a new, fully staged chamber opera production under the artistic leadership of Maestro Lorin Maazel. Up to 200 young artists (singers, instrumentalists, conductors, designers, stage directors, coaches and stage managers) are invited to live and work together intensively in the inspiring atmosphere of Castleton Farms. The artists rehearse and perform according to the highest professional standards, while receiving practical experience/training and career guidance from mentors and visiting faculty. The Festival includes additional recitals and workshops as well as a more formal program of coaching, master classes and workshops.

Lorin Maazel (President and Artistic Director)

For over five decades, Lorin Maazel has been one of the world’s most esteemed and sought-after conductors. Maestro Maazel recently completed his seventh and final season as Music Director of the New York Philharmonic. He continues, now in his fourth season, as the first Music Director of the spectacular, Santiago Calatrava-designed opera house in Valencia, Spain, the Palau de les Arts “Reina Sofia” and as the founder and Artistic Director of the Castleton Festival.

Maestro Maazel is also a highly regarded composer, with a wide-ranging catalogue of works written primarily over the last dozen years. His first opera, 1984, based on George Orwell’s literary masterpiece, had its world premiere at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, in May 2005, and was broadcast on radio and television by the BBC and on many other national radio networks worldwide. A revival of 1984 took place at the Teatro alla Scala (Milan) in May 2008, and a Decca DVD of the original London production was released that same month. Maestro Maazel’s compositional catalogue also includes a trilogy of concertos (for cello, flute and violin), a symphonic movement (“Farewells,” Op. 14), premiered in 2000 by the Vienna Philharmonic, which commissioned the work; and several contributions to repertoire of narrated texts with orchestra, including two children’s stories, “The Giving Tree” and “The Empty Pot.”

A second-generation American born in Paris, Lorin Maazel began violin lessons at age five, and conducting lessons at age seven. He studied with Vladimir Bakaleinikoff, and appeared publicly for the first time at age eight, conducting a university orchestra. Between ages nine and fifteen, he conducted most of the major American orchestras, including the NBC Symphony at the invitation of Toscanini. At 17, he entered the University of Pittsburgh to study languages, mathematics and philosophy. In 1951 he went to Italy on a Fulbright Fellowship to further his studies, and two years later made his European conducting debut, stepping in for an ailing conductor at the Massimo Bellini Theatre in Catania, Italy. He quickly established himself as a major artist, appearing at Bayreuth in 1960 (the first American to do so), with the Boston Symphony in 1961, and at the Salzburg Festival in 1963.

In the years since, Maestro Maazel has conducted more than 150 orchestras in no fewer than 5,000 opera and concert performances. He has made over 300 recordings, including symphonic cycles/complete orchestral works of Beethoven, Brahms, Debussy, Mahler, Schubert, Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff, and Richard Strauss, winning 10 Grands Prix du Disques.

Maestro Maazel has been music director of the Symphony Orchestra of the Bavarian Radio (1993 until summer 2002), music director of the Pittsburgh Symphony (1988–96); general manager and chief conductor of the Vienna State Opera (1982–84) — the first American to hold that position; music director of The Cleveland Orchestra (1972–82); and artistic director and chief conductor of the Deutsche Oper Berlin (1965–71). He was named Honorary Member of the Israel Philharmonic in 1985 when he conducted its 40th Anniversary concert. He is also an Honorary Member of the Vienna Philharmonic, and is the recipient of the Hans von Bülow Silver Medal from the Berlin Philharmonic. His close association with the Vienna Philharmonic includes 11 internationally televised New Year’s Concerts from Vienna (often with Maestro Maazel making an added contribution to the festivities as violinist).

Alongside his prodigious performing activity, Maestro Maazel has found time to work with and nurture young artists, based on his strong belief in the value of sharing his experience with the next generation(s) of musicians. He founded a major competition for young conductors in 2000, culminating in a final round held at Carnegie Hall two years later, and has since been an active mentor to many of the finalists (and instrumental in launching their international careers). Through his Châteauville Foundation, in Castleton, Virginia, he has created a new Festival and residency program for young artists, centered around fully staged productions of chamber operas, bringing together aspiring singers, instrumentalists, conductors, designers, directors, and stage management personnel to work in an intensive, collaborative environment, with guidance from senior artists/mentors, Maestro Maazel included.

He has an equally strong commitment to environmental and humanitarian causes. He has raised millions of dollars on over 50 occasions for the benefit of such entities as the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), World Wide Fund for Nature, the Red Cross and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

An avid reader, classic film buff, and theatergoer, he also enjoys playing tennis, swimming and collecting American paintings and Oriental art.

Dietlinde Turban-Maazel (Vice-President and co-Artistic Director)

Dietlinde Turban’s first stage appearance at the age of 19 as Gretchen in Goethe’s Faust in the Residenz-Theatre in Munich brought her national fame. In rapid succession she starred in new productions of Lessing’s Minna von Barnhelm (as Minna), Shakespeare’s Othello (as Desdemona), for which she received the Bad Hersfeld Festival’s prize for best actress, and in works of Anouilh, Giraudoux and others. She was invited as guest star at the State Theater in Bonn and the Josefstadt Theatre in Vienna.

Thanks to scores of films and plays filmed for television, Ms. Turban won Germany’s coveted Bambi Award by popular vote as Best Actress of the Year (1983).

Among her credits: the title role in Goethe’s Stella and Schiller’s Love and Intrigue (Luise), the role of Mozart’s sister-in-law Aloysia in the French film biography of the composer, a starring role in the American thriller Bloodline, and the part of Euridice in Jean-Pierre Ponnelle’s adaptation of Monteverdi’s Orfeo. Her film credits include Die Kalte Heimat, Die Undankbare, Peter Schamoni’s The Castle in Königswald and the World War II story Mussolini and I, in which she played opposite Anthony Hopkins.

In 2004 Ms. Turban founded the New York based Crescent Theatre Company. She premiered Christopher Rothwell’s One Woman Play Constantly Risking Absurdity in Castleton and at the Cherry Lane Theatre, New York, performed it at the George Mason University and was also invited with this play to Salzburg, Austria, by the American Austrian Foundation. Recently the Crescent Theatre Co. merged with Kid Pan Alley (see www.kidpanalley.org).

Ms. Turban has recorded a number of audio books as well as CDs in collaboration with young composers. She also performs dramatic readings of literary masterpieces both in the United States and in Europe and regularly tours with recitals based on works by Andersen, Fontane, Heine, Kafka, Rilke, Schiller and Thomas Mann.

Ms. Turban studied violin, classical dance and voice in her home town Munich, Germany and in Aspen, Co. After a decade of an intense acting career she married the conductor Lorin Maazel and devoted much of her time to raising their three home-schooled children while traveling throughout the world. In 1996 she co-founded a private “charter” school on her Virginia estate, based on the holistic ideas of Rudolf Steiner, “The Hearthstone School”, and developed a pilot educational project designed to explore new ways of integrating vital artistic and aesthetic values into school curricula.

Ms. Turban coaches young opera singers in performance skills, song interpretation, German and French, and holds Acting Master Classes and Workshops in various summer programs.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Songwriters Hall of Fame

2010 Awards Ceremony Event to Induct Leonard cohen, JACKIE DESHANNON, DAVID FOSTER, JOHNNY MANDEL and earth, wind & fire’s maurice White, philip bailey, verdine white, larry dunn and al mckay

New York, NY – February 16, 2010 – Leonard Cohen, Jackie DeShannon, David Foster, Johnny Mandel and Earth, Wind & Fire’s Maurice White, Philip Bailey, Verdine White, Larry Dunn and Al McKay will be inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame this year, SHOF Chairman/CEO Hal David announced today. The organization, which is dedicated to recognizing the work and lives of those composers and lyricists who create popular music around the world, returns for its highly anticipated 41st annual induction and awards dinner, scheduled for Thursday, June 17 at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in New York City. Special award honorees will be announced at a later date.

“Our 2010 inductees are truly representational of the heart and soul of the world’s Popular Music soundtrack,” commented Chairman/CEO Hal David. “We are looking forward to another memorable evening where we honor their extraordinary accomplishments.”

Leonard Cohen: Leonard Cohen received the Grammy 2010 Lifetime Achievement Award in honor of his legendary career of artistic accomplishments in songwriting and performing. Over 2,000 covers of Cohen’s songs have been recorded by artists such as R.E.M., Bob Dylan, Elton John, Judy Collins, Willie Nelson and most recently, Justin Timberlake’s rendition of “Hallelujah” that appeared on Cohen’s 1984 Various Positions album. Cohen always had an interest in music, but it wasn’t until 1966 that his focus turned to songwriting after gaining international recognition for his poetry. Before he released a single song, Cohen sold the highly successful “Suzanne” to Judy Collins which later was included on his debut album, The Songs of Leonard Cohen in 1967 along with “Sisters of Mercy,” and “So Long, Marianne.” His next two albums, Songs from a Room and Songs of Love and Hate solidified Cohen’s iconic status with “Bird on a Wire” and “Famous Blue Raincoat.” His multidimensional lyrics have captured fans spanning generations and nationalities for decades. He was inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame (2006) and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (2008) for his outstanding work. Cohen’s world tour, which inaugurated in May 2008, is still playing to sold-out crowds.

Jackie DeShannon: Singer-songwriter Jackie DeShannon is best known as the soulful voice behind two of the 1960s most enduring, era-defining anthems – Burt Bacharach & Hal David’s “What The World Needs Now Is Love” and DeShannon’s own “Put A Little Love In Your Heart.” Her songs have been performed by such artists as Al Green, Annie Lennox, Van Morrison, Brenda Lee, The Carpenters, The Temptations, Marianne Faithfull, The Searchers, Ella Fitzgerald and Bruce Springsteen. In the early 1960s, Jackie partnered with Sharon Sheeley on dozens of songs (“Dum Dum,” “The Great Imposter,” “Breakaway,” “You Won’t Forget Me”). Collaborations followed with Randy Newman, Jack Nitzsche, Jimmy Page and John Bettis. In 1964, Jackie toured as an opening act for the Beatles. Writing solo, she composed the hits “When You Walk In The Room” and “Come And Stay With Me.” She earned a million-seller in 1969 with “Put A Little Love In Your Heart,” written with Randy Myers and Jimmy Holiday. DeShannon won a Grammy for Song of the Year in 1982 for “Bette Davis Eyes” with writing partner Donna Weiss.

David Foster: To say that everything David Foster touches turns to gold—and usually platinum—would be an understatement. This stunningly talented songwriter is a 15-time Grammy Award winner with an unprecedented 46 nominations, a recipient of seven Juno Awards, an Emmy Award in 2004 and a three-time Oscar nominee, all over the course of four extraordinarily successful decades. Foster’s career path soared in the 1980’s as he produced and wrote an extraordinary lineup of No. 1 singles, including Chicago’s “Hard To Say I’m Sorry,” Peter Cetera’s “The Glory of Love,” and John Parr’s “Man in Motion” (St. Elmo’s Fire soundtrack). In 2007 he was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame. Foster has worked with the biggest and best talents in the music industry, including Celine Dion, Josh Groban, Andrea Bocelli, Barbra Streisand, Michael Buble’, Seal, Earth, Wind & Fire, Madonna, Michael Jackson, Barbra Streisand, Whitney Houston and many more. Iconic songs in the Foster catalog include “After The Love Is Gone,” “I Have Nothing,” “Look What You’ve Done To Me,” “The Prayer” and “You’re The Inspiration.” Foster recently produced two top ten albums on the Billboard Top 200 Chart - Michael Buble’ (“Crazy Love”) and Andrea Bocelli (“My Christmas).

Johnny Mandel: Johnny Mandel, the five-time Grammy recipient and Oscar and Emmy Award winner is a composer, arranger, instrumentalist and record producer living a life totally steeped in musical achievement. As a teenager, Mandel was a member of Joe Venuti’s orchestra, followed by employment as a player and/or arranger in bands led by Henry Jerome, Buddy Rich, Jimmy Dorsey, Woody Herman and Artie Shaw. In the late 1940s and early 50s, Mandel was an arranger and composer for radio and the new medium of TV. At the same time, he played trombone and wrote arrangements for the Count Basie Orchestra. The West Coast recording scene beckoned Johnny in 1954 where he began arranging sessions for stars like Frank Sinatra, Peggy Lee, Mel Tormé, Jo Stafford, Tony Bennett, Chet Baker and Andy Williams. Hollywood film assignments began coming in for Mandel as well, beginning with the all-Jazz score he composed for I Want to Live in 1958. Many Mandel film scores have followed, among them The Americanization of Emily, The Sandpiper, M*A*S*H*, Being There and The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming. Mandel-composed standards include “The Shadow of Your Smile,” “Emily,” “Where Do You Start?” and “Close Enough for Love.” In recent years, Mandel’s career has continued to flourish as he has remained busy producing and arranging recordings for Natalie Cole, Diana Krall and, most recently, for Barbra Streisand and Willie Nelson, among many others.

Earth, Wind & Fire: Earth, Wind & Fire is one of the most innovative and commercially invincible contemporary Pop / R&B music forces of the 20th century. Members Maurice White, Philip Bailey, Verdine White, Larry Dunn and Al McKay are known for their signature sound of fusing Pop, R&B, Rock, Latin, Funk, Jazz and African Music to win numerous awards. Earth, Wind & Fire has received 20 Grammy nominations; winning six as a group and its founding members, Maurice White and Philip Bailey, winning two awards each. The band was also awarded the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences Signature Governor’s Award. Earth, Wind & Fire have earned more than 50 Gold and Platinum albums and have sold over 90 million albums worldwide. They have been inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame (2000) and received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame (1995). The music industry and fans have bestowed Lifetime Achievement honors from ASCAP (Rhythm & Soul Heritage Award - 2002), NAACP (Hall of Fame - 1994) and the BET Awards (Life Time Achievement Award 2002). Two Earth, Wind & Fire classic songs have been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame: “That’s The Way of The World” (2004) and “Shining Star” (2007). Earth, Wind & Fire have 12 American Music Awards nominations and four awards. The band is also known as having been the first African-American performers to sell out Madison Square Garden and to receive the MSG Gold Ticket Award. President Obama invited the band to perform at the White House for the first social event of the new administration. Through the decades their songs have been covered by recording artists such as Jerry Garcia Band, D’Angelo, Patti LaBelle, Chaka Khan and many others.

About The Songwriters Hall of Fame: The Songwriters Hall of Fame celebrates songwriters, educates the public with regard to their achievements, and produces a spectrum of professional programs devoted to the development of new songwriting talent through workshops, showcases and scholarships.
February 2, 2010 MICHAEL TILSON THOMAS AND THE SAN FRANCISCO SYMPHONY, WINNERS OF THREE GRAMMYS AT 52ND ANNUAL GRAMMY AWARDS, TO MAKE FIVE-CITY U.S. TOUR MARCH 18-26

Tour Includes Two Carnegie Hall Concerts, Which Mark Orchestra’s 25th Visit to the Hall

SAN FRANCISCO, CA – Michael Tilson Thomas (MTT) and the San Francisco Symphony (SFS) will make a five-city U.S. tour from March 18 to 26 with performances in Champaign-Urbana, IL (March 18); Ann Arbor, MI (March 19 and 20); Philadelphia (March 23); Washington, D.C. (March 24); and in New York at Carnegie Hall (March 25 and 26). The March 25 and 26 concerts mark the Orchestra’s 25th engagement at Carnegie Hall since its first appearance there in 1947.

The tour repertoire features violinist Christian Tetzlaff performing Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto and soprano Laura Claycomb and mezzo-soprano Katarina Karnéus in Mahler’s Symphony No. 2, Resurrection. Symphony No. 2 has been recorded by the San Francisco Symphony as part of its Mahler Project, which to date has won seven Grammy Awards, including three Grammys for Mahler Symphony No. 8 and the Adagio from Symphony No. 10 at the most recent Grammy Awards on January 31. The tour also includes a new work commissioned by the San Francisco Symphony, Post-scriptum by Russian composer Victor Kissine, which is dedicated to MTT and the SFS, as well as Ravel’s Valses nobles et sentimentales and Liszt’s Tasso: Lament and Triumph. The Symphony will perform the world premiere of Victor Kissine’s Post-scriptum March 4 in San Francisco, which is dedicated to MTT and the SFS.

Michael Tilson Thomas and the San Francisco Symphony open their 2010 U.S. tour at the Krannert Center on the campus of the University of Illinois on Tuesday, March 18 followed by a two-day visit to the University of Michigan, with performances at Hill Auditorium on March 19 and 20. In Ann Arbor, MTT and musicians of the Orchestra will hold master classes with University students and host a series of educational events including a teacher workshop, symposium, and a screening of its Keeping Score PBS series for students. At the March 20 concert, MTT and the SFS will receive the University Music Society’s Distinguished Artist Award, in recognition of the SFS’ long standing relationship with the University of Michigan’s music school. It is the first time in the history of the award that it is being presented to an orchestra. At the March 18 Champaign-Urbana concert, the Orchestra performs Victor Kissine’s Post-scriptum, Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto with Christian Tetzlaff, Liszt‘s Tasso: Lament and Triumph and Ravel’s Valses nobles et sentimentales. The Orchestra will repeat this program at Hill Auditorium on March 19, and on March 20 they will perform Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 with Laura Claycomb, Katarina Karnéus, and the University Musical Society Choral Union.

At the Kimmel Center in Philadelphia on Tuesday, March 23, the Orchestra will be joined by the Westminster Symphonic Choir in Mahler’s Symphony No. 2, and on March 24 at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., MTT and the Orchestra will perform the program of works by Kissine, Tchaikovsky, Liszt, and Ravel.

MTT and the San Francisco Symphony return to New York’s Carnegie Hall on Thursday and Friday, March 25 and 26, with concerts of both tour programs. The Westminster Symphonic Choir will again join the Orchestra on March 26 in Mahler’s Symphony No. 2.

This season Michael Tilson Thomas celebrates his 15th season as Music Director of the San Francisco Symphony. In 1996, MTT led the orchestra on the first of their 22 national and international tours together to Europe, Asia and throughout the United States, with annual performances at Carnegie Hall. Last season they opened Carnegie Hall’s 2008-09 season with a gala tribute to Leonard Bernstein, which was filmed and broadcast nationally on Thirteen/WNET New York’s Great Performances on PBS. Other tour highlights have included their third West Coast tour with MTT in January 2009, including their first concerts in Seattle since 1981; their first appearances in mainland China as part of their 2006 Asia tour; a three-week 2007 European tour that featured two televised appearances at the BBC Proms in London and concerts in such European music capitals as Dublin, Vienna, Paris, and Belgium; and at several major European festivals, including Lucerne.

Michael Tilson Thomas and the San Francisco Symphony maintain a leading presence among American orchestras through over 230 concerts at home and abroad, an active touring program, award-winning recordings, and innovative broadcast and education projects. Their commitment to music education has resulted in the groundbreaking television, radio and multimedia project Keeping Score; a nationally syndicated radio series on avant-garde American composers, American Mavericks; an award-winning children’s website, www.sfskids.com; and Adventures in Music, a nationally acclaimed in-school music education program in San Francisco schools. The Keeping Score series has been viewed by over six million Americans since its first broadcast in September 2006 and acclaimed for making classical music accessible to a wider, more diverse audience. This year, Tilson Thomas and the SFS conclude an ambitious self-produced Mahler recording project, launched in 2001. To date, the Orchestra’s Mahler cycle on SFS Media has been recognized with seven Grammy Awards, winning three 2009 Grammy Awards on for its recording of Mahler’s Symphony No. 8 and the Adagio from Symphony No. .10..

DLF IPL is Back in India, only on MAX

Even the DLF IPL team captains missed playing in India!

“Dada missed you too!” says Sourav Ganguly…
“Boy, did we miss you!” says Shane Warne…
“We missed you too!” says Anil Kumble…

Mumbai, January 7, 2010: DLF IPL returns to home ground this season. With the second edition of the DLF Indian Premier League having moved to South Africa, millions of fans across India were deprived of the “touch and feel” of the DLF IPL, that too so soon after the stupendous success of Season One. But this year, the nation has reason to rejoice, as the tournament returns to India to a thundering reception. MAX, the exclusive broadcaster of the DLF IPL, will once again capture the phenomenon and bring to your homes the world’s biggest cricket extravaganza!

The 2010 edition of the DLF IPL broadcast just got even bigger and even more thrilling. MAX’s campaign for the DLF IPL 2010 is centred around “The Homecoming” of the IPL and the campaign kicks off with an exclusive series of short films shot with the 8 team captains of the IPL highlighting the theme “We missed you too.” The DLF IPL teams missing playing in India is the essence of these films. Through these films, the team captains express their disappointment at not having had the opportunity to play in front of their home crowd last season and their happiness at the fact that they will be playing in India again. These films are slated to be on-air from 7th January, 2010.

Speaking on the launch of the campaign, Sneha Rajani, EVP & Business Head, MAX said “MAX’s marketing campaigns have always been path breaking, innovative and completely entertaining. I am extremely excited with our latest campaign for the DLF IPL 2010 which is very different from what we have done before and am sure the audience will thoroughly enjoy it. The campaign captures the mood of the nation and that of the DLF IPL and the teams as well. Last year with the IPL being in South Africa, it left a big void in the hearts of millions of fans in India. Now that its back where it belongs we want to tell the nation that we too missed them and their over whelming support!”

The films have been shot by Storytellers and directed by Arun Gopalan. Given that the entire country is excited about this tournament coming back to India, these films will be aired pan India. In addition to the films being aired on SET network channels, it will also be aired on news channels, music channels, kids channels and regional channels.

There is far more to watch out for as MAX will culminate these short films into a grand finale film which will be unveiled in the later part of the campaign to welcome DLF IPL back in India. Keep watching!

Catch all the action on DLF IPL 2010
Vaapas India mein, vaapas aapke beech mein! Only on MAX!
