Utsav Lal, Indian Pianist Lal named on the coveted worldwide “Young Steinway Artist” Roster
Since 1853, Steinway & Sons have been maker of the worlds most sought after pianos and the world’s most accomplished pianists have preferred to express their musical genius on Steinway pianos. Acceptance into the worldwide Steinway Artist roster indicates high musical performance achievement and reflects an artist’s dedication to and confidence in the Steinway piano. It is said that the artist members of the Steinway family are each as unique as the pianos themselves.
On 23rd Feb 2010, Steinway & Sons has named Indian Raga Pianist-Utsav Lal to its coveted worldwide artist roster as a “Young Steinway Artist”, officially welcoming Utsav to the distinguished international roster of Steinway Pianists.
The Steinway artist family encompasses all genres of music from classical, jazz, cabaret, pop and others. This is the first time that the Artist roster will include Indian Classical Music.
Lal, more popularly known as ‘Raga Pianist’ is one of the first Indian musicians to perform Hindustani Classical music as a concert pianist. Based in Dublin, 17 yrs old, Lal who features in the Limca Book of Records 2007 and the youngest winner of Ireland’s MAMA Award 2008, is the first Indian pianist to receive this honour of being a Young Steinway Artist. With this new laurel, he joins the celebrated Steinway community of the world’s most acclaimed pianists , taking Indian Ragas on Piano to entirely new global heights. Over 100 concerts and two released piano solo albums, the young pianist has quickly become a well recognised name at international venues and music festivals and will be performing next at the Novara Jazz Festival, Italy in May 2010 and at Steinway Hall, London on Sept 8, 2010.
The Steinway piano is heard on the stages of prestigious international concert venues and for decades Steinway & Sons has cultivated special relationships with pianists from every genre. Its concert & artist department has served the most talented & revered pianists throughout the globe making available pianos for recording concerts, television etc.To be considered for being named a Steinway artist, a musician must have an exceptional and a solid record of quality and quantity concert playing . And, of course, they have to own a Steinway.
Taking pride in its role of nurturing talent and promoting the art of piano playing, Steinway & Sons have developed the new “Young Steinway Artist” program which welcomes young pianists at an early point in burgeoning careers. This program confers upon a select group of talented pianists, aged 17-35 yrs, the distinction of affiliation with the Steinway artist family and access to its worldwide resources of Steinway & Sons and its exclusive network of dealers.
On being asked how he felt, Lal said “I see this as a lauding of my efforts to take the sound of ragas on the piano to every corner of the globe. The depth of tonal quality in a Steinway is incomparable. Listening to the reverberation of a single note, especially during the Alaap of a Raga takes me on a journey in the universe of sound. A Steinway is regal grandeur and I love my Boston Grand Piano….it’s full, rich and has magical warmth, singing to you as you talk to it. It is a great privilege and honour to be part of the the Steinway family and this further strengthens my purpose as a musician.”
