BBC World News and BBC.com sign new partnership with InterContinental Hotels & Resorts for third series of The Real…

9 September 2009. BBC World News, with BBC.com, today announces a renewal of its successful advertising partnership with InterContinental Hotels & Resorts, with the commissioning of a third series of the popular travel programme The Real…

The ad-funded, weekly, five-part series begins on Saturday 19 September on BBC World News. The series will encompass five new episodes of programme, visiting the exciting cities of Rio de Janeiro, Hong Kong, Beirut, Rome and Washington DC. With the help of knowledgeable, well known local personalities, the series reveals to viewers the key spots to visit, often missed in guidebooks. In addition, it is the first time that the programmes will be distributed on BBC America.

The programmes will also be supported with dedicated pages on BBC.com, the BBC’s international website, that feature video clips and information on each of the cities from the new and previous series.  The Real… branded widget will feature on the BBC.com homepage, for the duration of the show’s transmission, taking audiences directly to the online content.

Mumbai, 12 March 2009.  In a special programme, Atif Aslam Unplugged, the popular Pakistani pop-singer speaks exclusively to the BBC’s Deepak Sharma about his singing career, his entry into Bollywood, favourite songs, singers and actors and his fan following.  The singer also shares with the BBC his childhood memories and his aspirations.

The programme, which is interspersed with Atif Aslam’s favourite Bollywood numbers as well as songs from his various albums, will be broadcast on Thursday 12 March on Radio One 94.3 FM in Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi, Mumbai and Pune.  The interview will also be rebroadcast by the following BBC partner stations in India: Radio Chaska in Gwalior, Radio Choklate in Bhubaneshwar, Cuttak and Rourkela, Radio Misty in Siliguri, Radio Rangila in Raipur, Radio Tadka in Jaipur and Udaipur, Tomato FM in Kolhapur.  It will also be aired by Radio Spice in Dubai, UAE.

Talking to the BBC, Atif says that training is not needed to become a singer and he, for one, is a born singer:  “A singer should not be criticised just because he is not trained because, according to me, you do not need training for singing.”

When he was young, Atif wanted to be a cricketer and even was selected for the under-19s team.  But he believes he was destined to be a singer and is enjoying his life today.  It was Mahesh Bhatt who recognised his talent and, after listening to his song Woh Lamhe, introduced him to Bollywood.

Atif says that he is a big fan of Kishore Kumar:  “It was Kishore Da’s songs which inspired me to become a singer.”  Ends/

New Delhi, 21 January, 2009. BBC World News, the BBC’s international 24-hour news and information channel, is set to host the Spirit of Golf 2009 tournament, taking place on 24 January at the Jaypee Green grounds, New Delhi.

BBC World News is hosting the event in association with the Ministry of Tourism, India, which has been associated  with the tournament since its inception.  Participants will include corporate leaders and top bureaucrats, they will compete for prizes as well as the honour of winning Spirit of Golf 2009. There will also be a Golf Clinic to initiate beginners to the basics of golfing.

Jonathan Howlett, Director of Advertising Sales, BBC Worldwide, says, “It’s wonderful to be returning to New Delhi for the 2009 Spirit of Golf tournament, and it’s equally great to be continuing our long standing association with the Ministry of Tourism, as well as many returning sponsors.  The tournament has become a highlight of our calendar, especially with the great facilities here in India.”
