VISUAL ARTS Seattle Center’s Northwest Rooms are the home to Bumbershoot’s visual arts galleries. The 2009 exhibits emphasize artistic involvement and encourage Festival fans of all ages to engage in hands-on participation both at the Festival, and throughout the summer. The dynamic displays and interactive gallery spaces will be open throughout the Festival weekend, and will open early for a free public preview from Noon – 7pm on Friday, September 4, 2009, following the presentation of the Mayor’s Arts Awards at the Northwest Court.
Focusing on posters as cultural expression, The Seattle-Moscow Poster Show marks the culmination of a three-year exploration of graphic art as bridge between cultures; previous years’ exhibits included art from Havanna, Cuba and Tehran, Iran. The show is a selection of more than 70 posters, half from each city, sharing cultural themes such as music, film, theatre, and contemporary art, curated by Seattle-based designer Daniel R. Smith.
The Gage Academy Drawing Jam, the surprise hit of Bumbershoot’s 2008 Visual Arts lineup (with approximately 10,000 Festival-goers attending in 2008), is back—and it’s bigger and better (now with sculpture)! The 2009 edition will allow art curiosos the opportunity to attend art school in the midst of Bumbershoot, complete with art supplies, figure models and professional artist demonstrations.
Kerfuffle (or The Uneasy Relationship Between Humanity and the Environment), curated by Chris Weber and Lele Barnett, is a multi-faceted multimedia show with works that explore waste, regrowth and sustainability. Kerfuffle will include Chris Jordan’s photographic portraits of global mass culture; Allison Kudla’s capacity for (urban eden, human error), which utilizes state-of-the-art technology to “print” intricate bio-architectural constructions out of plant matter; and work from Vaughn Bell, Joseph Gray, Karen Rudd, Christina Seely, Brent Watanabe, Kuros Zahedi, and select works from Terra Nova: Sinfonia Antarctica by Paul D. Miller aka DJ Spooky.
Created for Bumbershoot by Greg Lundgren’s Vital 5 Productions, Dada Economics aims to engage and inspire creativity and art-making on a world stage. All summer long, Arbitrary Art Grants are being distributed in a wide variety of artistic fields. Dada Economics will not only showcase the hilarious and often brilliant submissions collected throughout the summer, but Bumbershoot patrons will have the chance to participate in the exhibition, creating works in fashion, architecture and photography. Each day a new Arbitrary Art Grant will be awarded to a Festival patron who has dared to share their originality.
Bumbershoot’s Visual Arts Program is supported in part by the Seattle Office of Arts & Cultural Affairs. For more details on Bumbershoot’s Visual Arts Program visit: bumbershoot.org/_pdf/2009-06-11.pdf.

YOUNGERSHOOT Calling all kids (and their parents)! Bumbershoot provides the perfect place for family fun! The 2009 lineup will include special programs appropriate for the Festival’s younger fans, with hands-on activities, arts offerings, and music that’s friendly for the whole family including performances on the Northwest Court Stage by The Not-Its!, Central Services’ Board of Education and Recess Monkey.
The Bumbershoot Kids Pavilion will inspire the imagination as kids play, create, dance, experiment, craft, and learn. There will be opportunities to make music (and instruments!) with Soundbridge; mold an animated movie with ClayAnimation Network; check out Pacific Science Center’s REAL human organs; flip, twist and roll with Dizzy’s Tumblebus; and join ParentMap for a lesson in gardening. The Bumbershoot Kids Pavilion is open from 11am – 6pm daily inside the Center House.
Young fun continues in the Center House Theatre with Spin the Bottle, Jr., a kid-friendly version of Annex Theatre’s variety show that mixes a little music, with a little dance, theatre and film. Junior film buffs can take their families to SIFF Cinema every day at Noon where 1 Reel Film Festival, presented by Seattle Center, hosts Films4Families, a special program of film shorts that are as appropriate for kids as they are rewarding for those that are still kids at heart.
A separate Youngershoot schedule allows parents the opportunity to plan their days in advance. Parents can download a copy of the suggested family friendly programming at: bumbershoot.org/youngershoot.

SUSTAINABILITY GOALS Bumbershoot is a leader in the Festival industry for its environmental initiatives. The carbon-neutral Festival has included conscious decisions to decrease its impact on the environment, while supporting the culture and community in which it resides. These tenets of sustainability have guided the event to annually re-examine basic operations, reduce, reuse, recycle, offset all round-trip artist transportation, and seek Festival programs that incorporate messages of sustainability and social responsibility. Bumbershoot encourages all Festival patrons to act individually by using alternative transportation, personal non-disposable water bottles (and filling them up for free at the provided refill stations), and recycling and composting around the grounds. Additionally, Bumbershoot encourages social responsibility through the Festival’s Send a Kid program (an act that sends an under-served youth and their chaperone to the Festival for a day of music, arts, inspiration and imagination) and, new in 2009, the Bumbershoot Gives Back program, aiming to support other local non-profit organizations in meaningful ways that contribute to their immediate and long-term goals. Furthermore, all Festival guests can offset their personal travel emissions at bumbershoot.org or onsite at the NetGreen booth; all Bumbershoot carbon offset purchases support a regional methane capture project that will eliminate future greenhouse gas emissions from reaching the atmosphere and convert them into a clean power source for the local community. Bumbershoot’s green initiatives are supported by Clif Bar GreenNotes, Starbucks Coffee and Seattle Center Monorail. For more details on Bumbershoot’s green goals and an online application for the Bumbershoot Gives Back program, visit bumbershoot.org/green.
