Dawn Landes – Multi Instrumentalist, Songwriter

Dawn Landes – Multi Instrumentalist, Songwriter – ARTIST BIO (ARCHIVED)

Presently, Louisville, KY native Dawn Landes may be best known for her cover of “Young Folks,” for which she enlisted a group of “old folks”– the WST Bluegrass Band from Austin. Drawing on the Fast Folk heritage of Greenwich Village, the indie-pop leanings of her occasional partners Hem and The Earlies, and the studio wizardry she picked-up as a recording engineer,

Dawn Landes has carved herself a niche on the local NYC indie folk scene and throughout Europe. Dawn’s second album and first US release, Fireproof, is an astonishing mixture of the urban and the rural. The aptly named Fireproof album was recorded live to 2” tape in a single day in an old fire station in Red Hook, Brooklyn (along with drummer Ray Rizzo, bassist Jonny Flaugher and engineer Adam Lasus). As a lyricist, Dawn Landes’ early influences were more clearly traditional and literary.

It was in New York City that Dawn’s musical “experiments” would find a professional home.  It was in France that Dawn landed her first record deal with a little label out of the South of France, Ocean Records. Dawn continues her work now while living in Paris and touring Europe.

Collaborating, recording and performing alongside some of Frances’ rising stars and even a few Brooklyn ex-pats like Jason Glasser, cellist player and producer of Clem Snide. She is even starting to pen a few tunes in French. On tour, Dawn Landes has also reached a broader public by playing recent tours with Josh Ritter, Tom Mcrae, Midlake, Fionn Regan and Joan as Police Woman.

Benzos Quartet – Artist Bio

Benzos  Quartet – Artist Bio (ARCHIVED)

Benzos is a New York based Stinky Records’ genre-bending quartet. Their sophomore album Branches which hit stores on August 7, 2007, seamlessly blends the ambience and rhythm of early underground dance and experimental electronic music with lush, rock-based guitars and soaring vocals.

Members:

  •     Christian Celaya (guitar/synth/vocals)
  •     Brian Joyce (guitar/vocals)
  •     Eiko Peck (bass) and
  •     Steve Bryant (drums/sampling).

Having undergone early changes in personnel and instrumentation, Benzos have overcome these obstacles by honing their creative vision to incorporate a heavily improvisational element, which they refer to as “live remixing” and which has become a hallmark of the band’s live shows. From the drum n’ bass overtones of “Hurt Everybody” to the infectious melodies of “Phase 2” to the dynamic vehemence of “Crooked Hands,” Branches engrosses you with transcendent emotions and complex, highly danceable rhythms that leave you wanting more.

Lead-off single, “Headrush”, holds their contemporaries at arms-length with a hard-rocking seventies vibe, hinting at Heart, with the piss and vinegar of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, still managing to distance themselves from the current crop of bands hogging up the blogosphere, discovering Gang of Four for the first time.

Singer Sarah Blasko – Artist Bio

Singer Sarah Blasko, Australia – Artist Bio (ARCHIVED)

Biography: First Album : Sarah Blasko’s first album, “The Overture &the Underscore”, propelled her into the public consciousness as a purveyor of inventive, intelligent pop music, sparking critical acclaim, a raft of ARIA nominations, a Gold album, sold-out tours and a performance at the Commonwealth Games closing ceremony. Recording in April this year, Sarah set to task bringing to life a brand new set of songs. Complementing the freshness of these new compositions, Sarah took a four-piece band into the studio – a converted former ballroom – where the twelve new tracks were recorded live in the spacious and ornate surrounds.

Second Album : The result is her second album, What The Sea Wants, The Sea Will Have. Recorded swiftly, the album displays a more succinct, a more lucid and a more forthright Sarah Blasko. Her lyrics shoot straight and the instrumentation is clear and purposeful in its application.

A mature and thoughtful collection of songs and a bold release for an artist still largely unknown to most, What The Sea Wants, The Sea Will Have marks the emergence of an important and original talent.

Despite Blasko’s grace in the face of her humble achievements thus far, her confidence must have grown a little. She has tiptoed amongst the shadows of people like Jim Moginie, Neil Finn, Paul McKercher & Victor Van Vugt – people whose contribution to music stretches back into her suburban youth. Yet Sarah has emerged into the sunlight on the other side unflinchingly still herself. A mature and thoughtful collection of songs and a bold release for an artist still largely unknown to most, “What The Sea Wants, The Sea Will Have” marks the emergence of an important and original talent.

Medeski Martin & Wood – Artist Bio

Medeski Martin & Wood,  New York – Artist Bio (ARCHIVED)

Radiolarians III (Indirecto) Release Date: August 4, 2009

This improvising trio Medeski Martin & Wood have released their third installment of The Radiolarian Series on August 4th, 2009. Radiolarians III was recorded in December 2008 and perfectly sums up the themes, motifs and styles laid out in the previous two Radiolarians records.

About the music : There is an epic feel at play here, as the choruses rise and swell out of low-lying grooves and polyrhythms. Highlights include the passionate and gritty traditional “Satan Your Kingdom Must Come Down,” the anthemic “Undone,” and the Latin-influenced acoustic opener “Chantes Des Femmes.”

Overall, Radiolarians III finds the trio doing what they do best, melding genres and improvising.

What results, is maybe the strongest and most cohesive album of the entire Radiolarians Series. The trio consists of Keyboardist John Medeski, Drummer Billy Martin, and Bassist Chris Wood.

This trio performed only the new material on tour, recorded the material immediately after getting off the road, and are now releasing these albums on their own Indirecto label.

The band has repeated this process three times, resulting in three albums. The first of which, Indirecto released as Radiolarians I, on September 30, 2008, the second being Radiolarians II on April 14, 2009, and the third installment, Radiolarians III, scheduled for release on August 4, 2009.

Annuals have a sophisticated and layered sound that belies the age of twenty-year-old lead singer and songwriter, Adam Baker. From the vocals, which alternate between sweet and otherworldly to loud shouts of glee, to the mammoth guitar explosions and strange indiscernible noises, Annuals infuse their music with an array of intense emotions.

Sara Watkins, Singer Songwriter

Sara Watkins – Bio, Singer Songwriter (ARCHIVED)

The 27-year-old singer-songwriter and fiddle player spent nearly two decades—all of her teenage and young adult life—as one-third of Nickel Creek, the Grammy Award–winning acoustic trio that used contemporary bluegrass as a starting point for its no-genre-barred sound. Along the way, she’s hinted at her desire to do a project of her own and even organized some exploratory sessions in Los Angeles about six years ago.

Now, with Nickel Creek on indefinite hiatus, she is releasing her self-titled solo disc, recorded in Los Angeles and Nashville and produced by former Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones. It features an impressively wide range of backing players and old friends, including itinerant alt-country duo Gillian Welch and Dave Rawling, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers keyboardist Benmont Tench, Elvis Costello drummer Pete Thomas; fellow travelers from the bluegrass world like Tim O’Brien, Chris Eldridge, Ronnie McCoury and Rayna Gellert; and her Nickel Creek bandmates.

Watkins’ debut has an air of easygoing virtuosity. She displays her skill as a multi-instrumentalist, playing the guitar and ukulele as well as the fiddle, and proves herself to be just as versatile, and breathtakingly mature, as a vocalist. Watkins segues gracefully from the lighthearted country and western swing of Jimmie Rodger’s “Any Old Time,” to the world-weariness and spiritual yearning of Norman Blake’s “Lord Won’t You Help Me,” to the romantic wistfulness of Jon Brion’s “Same Mistake.” Though she still considers herself a neophyte as a songwriter, her own work is as evocative as any of the material she’s chosen to cover. Her wordless fiddle tunes are exuberant, foot-stomping pieces, while the songs for which she wrote both music and lyrics have a heart-meltingly lovelorn quality. There’s honesty and empathy on tracks like the sweetly soulful “My Friend,” the brooding “Bygones,” and the rueful album closer, “Where Will You Be.” Watkins is newly, and very happily, married, but she knows how to channel the plaintive emotions of classic country and timeless pop in her own work.

Robert Francis Guitarist, Los Angeles

Artist Profile – Robert Francis Guitarist, Los Angeles (ARCHIVED)

Born in Los Angeles in 1987, Robert Francis grew up surrounded by music. His father is a classical music producer and eccentric owner of one of the largest collections of sheet music in the U.S.

After Robert studied piano for several years, his mother encouraged her then seven-year-old son to learn guitar so he could play the traditional ranchera songs she grew up singing with her sisters. When Francis was nine, family friend Ry Cooder gifted him his first National Slide guitar.

He also fell in love with Wim Wenders’ 1984 film Paris, Texas, for which Cooder composed the soundtrack. “It inspired me,” Robert remembers. “I got the idea in my head that I wanted to drop out of school and travel when I was 10 years old.”

By the time he reached eleventh grade, he decided school was not for him and left. He spent a little over a year living dangerously and upsetting all those close to him until he met a girl who would then change his life. “It was a really tumultuous romantic relationship that lasted on and off for a few years,” he says. “Then it just sort of fizzled out. I started writing songs the first time I figured out how to pinpoint that feeling of loss. I guess I was just waiting to make music until I had something to say. From then on, I realized I could write songs that really meant something to me.”

The result was One By One, which Francis recorded at a friend’s recording studio and released in August 2007 on Aeronaut Records. It didn’t sell much, but it earned positive reviews from critics who compared Francis to a young Townes Van Zandt. The attention led to a record deal with Atlantic Records, which is releasing Before Nightfall.
